My friend Paul, to whom I gave this painting, tells me that Tung Hoy was the place to go for Chinese food in Mammaroneck, NY in the 70’s – he says the parking lot used to be full of Lincoln Continentals & El Dorados.
It’s been closed for years. That’s Boston Post Road on the left. I was helping Paul with his painting contracting for a couple weeks, and we’d meet at the Starbucks - out of frame at right. We had a lot of fun slamming & verbally abusing each other as we worked, but we also shared our angst about hitting middle age – the little crossing sign at far left alludes to our talks about our respective families, and the stone (painted gold) Chinese lions reference, what else;“The Lions in Winter”. These were unconscious references, I guess; I only made the connections after I started the painting.
