Andrea Kantrowitz
...has the eye of an artist and the soul of a biologist.
Maybe it's the other way around.  She's the Lucian

Helen Levitt

Big hero of mine - first time I ever felt warmth & humanity
conveyed (brilliantly & unselfconsciously) in visual art. I was blown away by a show of
hers in Manhattan in the early eighties (Laurence Miller Gallery ?) and wrote to her -
she wrote back & we met. I remember that her village apartment was like a
late-fifties/early sixties time capsule ; kidney-shaped tables and stuff. She smoked
Carltons.  I remember her as being clear - eyed, sharp, a little bird-like but not in an
aggressive way. Don't know if I asked any interesting questions. Actually, I did ask
how she got so physically close to  these moments of emotion or drama; the subjects
don't seem to realize she's there. She said the camera (brownie ? don't remember)
was one of those box types you looked down into; a lot of people pictured
didn't
realize she was operating a camera.
                          Tony Millionaire
God knows when Tony Millionaire started 'maakies', but I remember excitedly telling
someone about it
fifteen years ago ! So he's been doing this hilarious, beautifully realized art,
day after day, week after week, for at least
fifteen  years.
